Some harmless fun with names here. Constructing imaginary teams like this is a goofy pastime that pops up frequently. I remember seeing lists like this sometimes in the Sunday Sports Section when I was a kid. I think Jim Bouton mentioned way back in Ball Four that they used to kill time in the bullpen thinking up funny teams when they weren't busy 'hunting beaver'. I hear radio announcers sometimes resort to this silliness usually during blowouts or rain delays when they have time to kill. Of course Chris Berman over at ESPN is always playing around with guys' names too.
My lists aren't meant to be exhaustive and cover every possible guy. I just included who I felt like including. A lot of guys who had merely a 'cup-of-coffee' in the major leagues were excluded since in general, familiar = funny. For instance, the ALL-GEOGRAPHY team didn't include Tom Ireland, Alex Madrid, or Steve Phoenix among others. They are certainly very appropriate but most folks never heard of these guys.
I also tried to stay fairly current and focused on the 1950's to the present so the real old-timers won't show up on the lists. For instance Zack Wheat and Ty (Corn on the) Cobb weren't on the ALL-FOOD Team.
Lastly, no sense listing every guy with a certain last name. So for instance on the ALL-REAL ESTATE team we have Toby Hall and Mel Hall. Coulda left it at just Toby (he's current and fairly well-known) but I always liked Mel too espec when he was w/the Tribe in the 80's. Plenty of other candidates could have been used...Jimmie Hall the '60s Twins Slugger (30HR guy)/Albert Hall the '80s Braves outfielder who I used to see on TBS all the time/Dick Hall the standout reliever for the O's on their W.S teams/Tough lefty Tom 'The Blade' Hall of the Twins when they won back-to back division crowns '69 & '70/Drew Hall the Cub lefty form the late '80s etc. etc. Too much bang for the buck kills the joke too.
OK. So what follows are my numerous 'themed' baseball teams which I'm sure you will find comprehensive enough. ENJOY!
